01
Logitech C920
Best all-round webcam for calls
The C920 is the reference webcam: it plugs into USB, appears as a normal camera and gives a clear 1080p picture in ordinary room light. It does not shine in dim rooms or when the light changes, so a lamp in front of you matters more than the camera.
What works
- + No driver needed
- + Clear 1080p at 30 fps
- + Fits a monitor or a tripod
What doesn’t
- – Colour is a little flat
- – Autofocus can hunt in low light
02
Logitech Brio 4K
Best image quality
The Brio offers a 4K sensor and copes better with backlight and mixed light than cheaper cameras. Most call apps do not send 4K, so you pay for it mainly in a sharper, cleaner 1080p. It makes sense if you present to clients or record video.
What works
- + Sharp sensor
- + Handles backlight better
- + Windows Hello sign-in
What doesn’t
- – Costs more than most people need
- – 4K needs a USB 3 port
03
Razer Kiyo
Best for dim rooms
The Kiyo has a ring light around the lens, which helps when your room is dim and you do not want to buy a separate lamp. It is a simple way to fix a dark picture on a budget.
What works
- + Ring light built in
- + Compact
What doesn’t
- – Lower resolution than the Brio
- – A ring light is harsh if turned all the way up
04
Elgato Facecam
Best for streaming
The Facecam targets streamers: 60 fps video and manual control of the picture through its own software. It is more than most people need for calls, and a good match for a streaming desk.
What works
- + 60 fps
- + Manual picture controls
What doesn’t
- – Needs its own software to get the most from it
